"Whooters" Baby Quilt

Well, I am going to be a *first time* grandmother and I am excited beyond excited! :o) Since my dd is into owls, I found this adorable quilt, *Whooters* from Su-Sun Designs. It is for machine applique but I am hand appliqueing it (my favourite thing to do!) using Patricia McLaughlin's method, by basting the applique pieces on fine non-fusible interfacing and then needle turn appliqueing them down. I ADORE this method and can do very fine applique. And it is portable. Anyhow, I have four little *owlies* finished and have 2 more to go. Then I will applique the branches and leaves onto the background fabric along with the owls and then border and quilt it. I am enjoying this quilt immensely. :o)

  1. The owls are looking terrific. My mother-in-law loves owls too and I am tempted, but really don't much like hand applique. I will look up the site you recommended and see if I can be converted.

  2. Congratulations on the baby. My DD and SIL are in the trying to become pregnant stages, so I am hoping to hear the news that I will be a first time grandma too. How exciting is this? The owls look awesome. I have a friend who is into owls, but like Amanda, applique is not my thing. I will try to find some paper pieced owls to make for her. Congrats on the baby again and keep the piece.

  3. I changed my blog post to say that the pattern is for machine applique but I am hand appliqueing it...because I like it. :o) Lots of people don't like hand applique but the machine appliqueing would be easy for this pattern.

  4. How adorable. I'm addicted to hand applique. When I pick it up and start working, I can feel my heart rate slowing.

  5. So adorable. Silly question, how do you applique it to your background? Do you cut away the interfacing or needle turn it and applique the whole piece? Thanks, Jenni
